We are excited to present the 2023 International Potato Center Annual Report: “Future-Focused 2030: Science for a Sustainable Tomorrow.”

 

2023 was a transformative year for CIP. With the launch of our new CIP2030 Strategy, we have strengthened our commitment to driving impactful change through science and innovation. This year’s report underscores our commitment to advancing four key science goals:

BIODIVERSITY

Mobilizing genetic diversity to enrich agroecologies and livelihoods.

CIP’s Genebank conserves 16,497 accessions from 83 countries, and our pioneering cryopreservation efforts store plant materials at -196°C to ensure they thrive for centuries. Discover how we’re shaping the future of agriculture and safeguarding biodiversity for future generations.

CROP IMPROVEMENT

Developing superior crop varieties to meet evolving farmer and consumer demands.

One of CIPAR stories highlights CIP’s groundbreaking work in crop improvement through hybrid breeding of sweetpotato.

With yield improvements of up to 132%, our innovative approach is helping to secure food sources for millions in Africa and beyond.

REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE

Enhancing productivity and building resilience through sustainable practices.CIP’s PZTM project is leading the way in regenerative agriculture by empowering farmers—especially women—to adopt sustainable practices.

By replacing traditional tilling with mulching, we’re seeing increased productivity, soil conservation, and community resilience.

URBAN FOOD SYSTEMS

Adapting innovations to improve urban diets and livelihoods. 

One of the highlights from #CIPAR2023—Ollas Communes, like the one started by Julia Burges in Manchay, have become lifelines for many during the pandemic and beyond.

Supported by CIP’s training in urban agriculture and business skills, these communal kitchens are not only feeding people but also empowering communities.
